A wait and see approach is being taken by Ontario’s Regional Chief Isadore Day on the recent federal budget.
Day says the fiscal document provided some very visible moves forward on boil water advisories and child welfare.
The government has also pledged an additional $16.5-billion for First Nations programming.
However, Day stresses the Liberals haven’t followed through on promises of electoral reform and eliminating the deficit, cautioning the on-going challenge is ensuring the Grits stay true to their word.
Day says he will be working closely with the Trudeau government to ensure money for Indigenous communities gets to the ground as soon as possible.
He notes they lived under ten years of darkness under the Harper government, stating they wouldn’t have seen this from the former Conservative government.
Day says they will work with it, even though they are skeptical in some senses.
