Northwestern Ontario’s mayors and city councillors are banding together in calling for northwestern Ontario Senator Lynn Beyak’s resignation.
They are sending a letter to the Conservative Caucus, the Prime Minister and our area MPs calling for her to be removed from her position.
NOMA President Wendy Landry says her beliefs do not represent the region.
“We definitely want to make it known that this is not good, and this is not acceptable. Our board voted unanimously at last night’s meeting to ask for her resignation.”
“She can’t speak against a time of truth and reconciliation, when we’re trying to build relationships moving forward, she’s working against making any progress. That’s not in line with what NOMA’s trying to do.”
She adds as a member of the Indigenous community, “she obviously doesn’t know that I’m also a Canadian citizen. And if you don’t who your Canadian citizens are and you’re making decisions for them, we have a problem.”
Landry says they can’t stand by while the Conservative senator makes statements like First Nations should trade in their status cards for Canadian citizenship
