The People Party of Canada has a candidate in the Thunder Bay-Rainy River riding for the next federal election.
Alan Aubut was in Atikokan and Fort Frances last week, drumming up support for his candidacy.
Aubut is a semi-retired geologist who says he is very familiar with the Rainy River district, having worked in the area for many years.
Aubut says he’s been pleased with the level of support received so far.
“I know there’s some support out here. I’ve had positive responses already. I want to meet people in person. People that have met me have not been dissatisfied with meeting the real me,” says Aubut.
The People’s Party was formed by former Conservative MPP Maxime Bernier shortly after he left the party in 2018 when he lost a bid to become leader.
The party ran candidates in 315 ridings in the 2019 election but failed to get anyone elected.
Aubut is confident the outcome in the next election will be different.
“The People’s Party were the new kid on the block, and people really didn’t know what to think of them. And now they’re starting to realize, ‘whoa, these people, we can relate to them. They can relate to us,'” says Aubut.
Aubut sees the People’s Party as the only one offering a common-sense platform offering respect, honesty and fairness.
He says it was for those reasons he decided to join the party and run as its candidate in the next election.
Some are suggesting that vote could come as early as this fall.
