An American group is promoting a program aimed at reducing sexual assaults and harassment in bars and restaurants.
The Safe Bar Program, a project of the Washington D.C. based Collective Action for Safe Spaces, provides staff with the tools necessary to prevent or even intervene in situatutions.
Coordinator Jessica Raven says alcohol is often used as a weapon as an accuse for agressive behaviour and bar staff are uniquely positioned to step in and take action.
The program is now in place in about 20 establishments in Washington, D.C.
Raven says her organization would like to expand it across the US and Canada.
Raven spoke about the program during a sexual assault awareness conference held last week in Fort Frances.
Ontario announced earlier this year it would fund the implementation of similar programs in the province.
