The Fort Frances Muskies failed to reach the playoff round, but organizers of the all-Ontario boys A/AA high school hockey championship in Fort Frances are pleased with how things went.
The final was decided in a shoot out last night with Belle River taking home their first ever title.
Committee co-chair Bob Miller says by all accounts the event ran without any major hitches, noting all of the visiting teams were very appreciative of the support received during their stay.
Miller is also happy with attendance, especially for the games involving the Muskies.
There were also large crowds for the playoff games, including last night’s medal games, which Miller says will bode well for the bottom line.
Miller says it’s likely there will be a profit at the end of day, but the exact dollar amount won’t be known for several days once all bills have been paid.
About 150 volunteers helped out during the three days with games being played in Emo, Couchiching First Nation as well as rinks at the Memorial Sports Centre.
On the ice, Cody McFarlane had the only goal in the shoot out to give the Belle River Nobles a 3-2 win over Hamilton’s St. Mary’s Crusaders in the goal medal game.
Belle River scored a powerplay goal late in the third to force overtime which decided nothing.
In the bronze medal game, the Holy Cross Raiders of St. Catherines beat Ottawa’s Immaculata Saints 3-1.
