A date has been identified for an official opening of the Rainy Lake Square in Fort Frances.
It’s scheduled for May 17.
Details are still being finalized.
Local economic development consultant Tannis Drysdale says the goal this year is make the square an active place this summer.
“Our goal is from May until the end of September, for us as an organization in the economic development to have something there every single Thursday,” says Drysdale. “We will have something there, whether it’s a movie or a band,or an event, every Thursday night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Farmer markets will also continue every Thursday with new markets planned for every Saturday during the summer months.
Drysdale says she’ll be talking to other groups in the near future about how they could take advantage of the site as well.
The Rainy Lake Concert Series is also expected to continue.
Last year’s series of performances were staged performances on a portable stage on Scott St. due to the Square not being ready for use, but were still well attended.
Drysdale says they are currently seeking out various grants to assist with that and will welcome private donations as well.
