A loud bang in the area of Highway 61 and Mount Forest Blvd has police wondering about a possible meteorite hitting earth.
Constable Julie Tilbury says the event shook homes in the area late Wednesday night.
“When the officers arrived on the scene, they found a large hole in the snow they observed that there were no foot prints around it. There were no tracks from any vehicles and inside of it was a pile of what appeared to a rock like substance.”
Linda Pohole lives in the area of the incident and says she called 911 after hearing a huge explosion which shook the house and thought a house may have blown up adding she was genuinely scared.
Retired Lakehead University geology professor Steven Kissen says based on his experience, this indeed appears to have been a meteorite.
He’s hoping whoever may have taken the rock will bring it to the university so they can authenticate it.
